In re: Richard T. Connors, No. BD-2013-112: Massachusetts Lawyer Suspended After Assault Conviction

by

The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court (“SJC”), located in Boston, has suspended an attorney from practicing law after he was convicted of criminal assault.  In the matter of Richard T. Connors, an attorney was involved in a verbal altercation in a parking lot, and then threatened another driver with a handgun.

After a jury trial, the attorney was convicted of assault with a dangerous weapon, and was sentenced to 1 year in prison.  Consequently, his license to practice law was temporarily suspended.

While he was incarcerated, the attorney and Bar Counsel submitted a joint stipulation to the Massachusetts Board of Bar Overseers (“BBO”), recommending that the attorney’s license be suspended for 9 months, and reinstated only upon the attorney’s full compliance with the terms of his sentence, which included completion of an anger management course.  The attorney also agreed to not seek a license or permit to carry a firearm while he is a member of the Massachusetts bar.

The BBO approved the joint stipulation, and submitted its recommendation to the SJC.  Justice Botsford subsequently entered an order suspending the attorney for 9 months, subject to all conditions of the parties’ stipulation.

Decision: In re: Richard T. Connors
